Residential Design
Residential Design: 順德
Unit area: 1800 sq. ft.
Project Description
This residential design project is located in Shunde District, China. Different from ordinary residences in Hong Kong, the units in the mainland are larger in size. They not only have multiple guest rooms, but are also equipped with facilities such as soaking tanks and saunas. This gives interior designers more space to be creative and design to meet the various needs of guests.
The area of this unit is about 1,800 square feet, but it is slightly different from ordinary houses. The owner only lives in this unit occasionally due to work. Although the owner does not live there regularly, he often invites friends and colleagues over during the holidays. Therefore, the unit does not need too much storage and storage space, but more rest and activity space.
The biggest feature of the living room of the unit is that it has multiple platforms and levels for guests to move and relax. There are also several small bookcases next to the stairs, forming a comfortable reading corner where the owner and guests can read and chat. There is also a small area for tea tasting, which allows multiple guests to engage in different activities at the same time, fully demonstrating the versatility of the living room.
In terms of furniture design, taking into account the owner’s religious beliefs, the designer skillfully incorporated patterns with religious symbolism into the furniture, such as the cabinet doors of the large wardrobe. To the average person, this design may just be simple lines, but it has special meaning to the homeowner. In the dining room, the dining table adopts a segmented retractable dining table, which is suitable for small family gatherings or gatherings with a group of colleagues and friends.
In terms of rooms, the master room is equipped with a double bed, and there is another room with a platform bed and bunk beds for the owner's three children to use when they return to the mainland for vacation. There is also a guest room, also equipped with a platform and bunk beds, for guests or colleagues to stay for a short period of time. Although the owner does not pursue a large amount of storage space, he still retains the floor cabinet under the bed for the owner or guests to place items. There are also shelves at the end of the bed where small items and daily necessities can be placed.
In terms of materials, the designer chose to use materials that do not require frequent repair or maintenance, such as using diatomaceous earth instead of latex paint, and avoiding the use of wallpaper and wood surfaces. Since the owner does not live here often, the walls will be more susceptible to mold. Diatomaceous earth has hygroscopic properties and can be easily cleaned even if it becomes moldy. The ceilings in the units are painted with latex paint, while diatomaceous earth is used on most of the walls to facilitate cleaning and improve durability.
This residential design project in Shunde District, China shows a larger residential unit, giving the designer more room for space planning. In addition to using multiple platforms and levels to plan different activity spaces, symbolic patterns are incorporated into the furniture design, adding unique meaning to the space.
