Project Description

The focus of residential design is not only space planning and furniture customization, but also the survey work before decoration, especially the renovation and renovation of old buildings. In this unit renovation project of Whampoa Garden Phase 2, we found a water seepage problem after taking over the building. Therefore, the designer needs to conduct a lot of inspection and survey work in advance to implement the renovation plan and avoid the recurrence of water seepage problems.

Before renovating an old building, a survey must be completed. The designer first needs to check the condition of the mud and water to prevent the concrete from peeling off. In addition, since many units in Whampoa Garden have water seepage problems, we need to conduct multiple water tests before renovation. If the ceiling or walls are corroded to the point of being hollow or peeling off due to water seepage, they need to be repaired before proceeding with the next step of decoration. The repair materials and procedures need to be followed up by the Buildings Department.

Additionally, units facing the sea are usually more humid, making the walls prone to mold, so more caution is needed when choosing paint. Among the brands currently chosen by more people in Hong Kong, Japanese paint claims to be waterproof. Its gum is relatively heavy and will form a waterproof film after being applied to the wall. It is highly flexible and easy to clean. When there is a temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, the wall has less chance of generating water vapor, thereby reducing the possibility of mold. However, this kind of paint cannot dredge the moisture on the bottom layer of the wall, and it is easy for mold to form on the bottom layer of the wall, causing the color of the wall to gradually darken.

Another option on the market is ICI paint, which is more breathable than Japanese paint and helps dissipate moisture from the bottom layer of the wall, reducing mold problems caused by moisture.

If the budget allows, guests can also choose to use diatomaceous earth, which stores moisture when it is humid and releases the stored moisture when it is dry. This feature can more effectively solve the problem of excessive moisture and mold on the wall. In addition, when customizing the whole house furniture, the designer chose ecological boards, which are not afraid of moisture and are not prone to mold.

In terms of interior design, one of the most eye-catching parts of the home are the doors, which are secret doors that come from Italy and are finished with artistic paints. This design makes the door surface flat and has neat lines, which is a very rare design in Hong Kong residences. The toilet also uses a concealed sliding door with a tub behind the door, which can greatly save space.

Another feature of Huangpu Garden Phase II is its diamond-shaped living room. In addition to customizing suitable furniture, the three-pointed and eight-pointed space planning is also a challenge for designers. In this protruding oblique corner of the living room, the designer placed a multi-layered shelf for the owner to place objects while filling the extra space behind the sofa.

In addition, the hostess likes Hello Kitty very much, so there are many Hello Kitty furnishings and decorations in the house. Even the furniture is printed with Hello Kitty patterns, such as the water heater in the toilet and the kitchen stove. The designer was initially worried that the cartoon pink color would be incompatible with the home design, but in the end, using different color combinations, the girly pink color was integrated into the kitchen and home, successfully satisfying the hostess's preferences.

The renovation of Whampoa Garden Phase II fully takes into account the characteristics of the units and the needs and preferences of the homeowners. Through careful survey work and material selection, the designer successfully provided solutions to the problems of water seepage and mold, while creating a comfortable, stylish and personalized living environment.
